2024 is FLYING by and will be gone before you know it!

CARRIE HAS BEEN FEATURED IN:

 37-Step Marketing Plan

  1. IMMEDIATELY: Set up IngramSpark (IS) author acct
    1. IngramSpark (IS) is a total pain with horrible customer service. It can take days to weeks to months to set up. You want to get your account approved straight away. Why use IngramSpark when you can just use Amazon? There are many reasons. Here are the top 3:
      1. IS has a much wider distribution
      2. IS distributes to libraries
      3. IS can get your book into bookstores
  1. IMMEDIATELY: Set up Amazon author acct
    1. Your publisher may or may not set up your Amazon and IngramSpark accounts
  2. Pick your publishing date
  3. Pick book size and page color
    1. CRITICAL: make sure to select a size and page color that are offered both on Amazon and IS (note: there will still be slight differences when you print on demand with these companies)
  4. Create Content-style Brand Book
    1. Similar to a brand book, this focuses directly on the written content for book sales
    2. This also helps when communicating verbally
    3. Use this book to ensure content consistency
  5. Create Launch Calendar
    1. Use a traditional calendar and
    2. Create a L-, L, and L+ style checklist
  6. Write or edit author bio
  7. Write or edit book blurb
  8. Write or edit book cover content
    1. Create the written content for paperback cover
    2. Create the written content for hardback cover
  9. Pick your Star Launch Team
    1. Make a list of 50–100 friends/influencers whom you know personally
    2. Highlight the closest 10, but reach out to all you think would support you by at least buying your book (and hopefully telling others about it)
  10. Create Star Launch request plan
    1. To get your Star Launch Team to actually ask their friends to support your book, you have to plan when and how to ask them to join your team.
    2. You also have to create content (e.g. emails) that they will send out to their networks. It must be so easy for them that they don’t even have to think about it!
  11. Get and set up email CRM
    1. Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or all-in-one options like Kajabi
  12. Set up Author Sites
    1. Besides your Amazon and IS sites, you need an author website set up with an email sign up link Kajabi has website and landing pages capability
    2. Once your Amazon and IngramSpark accounts are set up, you can customize the author page
    3. Upload author bio to website, Amazon, and IngramSpark
  13. Create Welcome Campaign
  14. Start Star Launch Campaign
    1. Before collecting emails, personally call or meet with people you want on your Star Launch Team
    2. Then, use email or group text (or both if they are comfortable) to communicate with your Star Launch Team
    3. Keep all group communication brief and never ask for more than one favor per message
  15. Start collecting emails
    1. Send your link to all your contacts and ask them to support your upcoming indie-published book
  16. Start email campaign: keeping them updated
  17. Start any social media campaigns
  18. Keyword selection - market research
    1. Research the best keywords for your title
  19. Category selection - market research
    1. Research the best categories for your title
    2. Categories may differ between platforms
  20. Book description for Amazon/Kindle/IS
    1. You can base this on your book blurb or
    2. You can reverse: write this first and pull your book blurb from this content
  21. Category selection - top 3
  22. Keyword selection –top 10
  23. L-56: Decide on Presales (Kindle, IngramSpark).
    1. You can set your book up for presales in IngramSpark, Kindle, and Audible. This should be done 6-8 weeks ahead of Launch Day in case of any delays. KDP (Amazon paperback and hardcover are not eligible for presale at this time)
  24. L-42-56: YES SEQUENCE. If yes to presales:
    1. L-56: Campaign: Cover contest (if no, you don’t have to do it this soon, but you can).
      1. Select 4 covers for email subscribers to vote on
      2. You can also use other communication such as social media posts, ads, texts, etc., depending on how you wish to communicate and to whom
    2. L-42-56: Upload final manuscript and Cover to IngramSpark and Kindle. You do not have to do the cover reveal yet!
  • The date you want to start presales: Cover reveal!
  1. If NO, skip the above “YES” sequence and continue as follows.
  2. (No later than L-21): Campaign - Cover contest (if you haven’t already for presales)
    1. Select 4 covers for email subscribers to vote on.
    2. You can also use other communication such as social media posts, ads, texts, etc., depending on how you wish to communicate and to whom
  3. Research other outlets for ad marketing: industry newsletters, magazines, organizations, etc.
  4. Create any needed ads for a/b testing
  5. L-7-14: Start email campaign: book launch!
    1. Once your book is FULLY, FINALLY, edited, you’ll switch to your book launch campaign. This is important!
  6. L-7: Campaign - Cover Reveal (if you haven’t already for presales)
    1. Seven days prior to campaign (or sooner, but you need at least the seven days), show your fans the cover selection
    2. Post on social media, email to subscribers, text friends, and text groups
    3. Ask Star Launch Team to like/comment/share/forward/etc.
  7. L: Launch Day! Watch platforms for Bestseller list and capture with screenshots
    1. Publish day (launch day) should be set aside for only publishing activities.
    2. Since no one will notify you if your book hits any of the bestseller lists, you and your team have to monitor this and take screenshots for proof. Even if you don’t care, you still want proof because you never know if you’ll need it.
    3. Launch party! The authors who experience the most success host a launch party, during which, readers order their copy.
  8. L+1: Post-launch email campaign for reviews, sales, and updates
    1. Day after launch starts your post-launch email campaign
    2. Ask for reviews
    3. Ask them to tell their friends
    4. Do all this in a polite, not sales-pitchy way
  9. L+7: (Optional: if seeking traditional publication) After a well-deserved, much needed rest, and also after 7 days to gather sales data, read reviews, and get feedback from supporters, now is the time to start your proposal if you are going to seek traditional publishing for your next book.
  10. L+14: Use sales data, reviews, and pictures of “bestseller” status (if available) to open communications with OOD PX, BX system, airports, local bookstores, and local libraries.
    1. Could send them a copy of the book
    2. Could sign the copies
  11. Continue campaign with OOD PX, BX system, airports, local bookstores and libraries, etc. for placement
  12. L+60: (Optional: if seeking traditional publication) Use sales data, reviews, and pictures of “bestseller” status (if available) to open communications with literary agents, small indie publishers (only ones that pay you, not vanity presses).
